Kayaking on the Sacramento River
After a crazy work week, my friend from work planned for a group of us to go kayaking. Having lived where I do, close to the river, and it's beauty during the summer, and the convenience access I had no idea this sweet, fun little activity was lurking just around the corner and up the street! We met up at the Sacramento Aquatics Center and rented single kayaks for cheap and signed up, registration took five minutes. We didn't even have to go through a boring training water safety class. For those of us who are swimmers and or used to be junior guards, that is a snooze in cruise! After signing up, we put our belongings in the lockers, handed over our ID's for safety precaution, we went to put our life vests on.
I couldn't believe how many people were out frolicking in the water, teaching classes, or just hanging out. There was everything from Kayaking, to Paddle Boats, to Paddle Boards, Wake Boarding, Canoeing, motor bikes, etc. What fun! The weather was nice, not too hot to go late in the evening around 5pm, put on sunblock just in case. Some people were on the other side of the river, chatting, reading, splashing, goofing off, some making out lol, it was just a laid back scene which was a pleasure to be around instead of stuff office.
There was a bit of a breeze that let the three of us coast: Kim (Tara's new friend), Tara, and myself. Geese flew nearby and skimmed the water and ducks were swimming everywhere. We managed to paddle a good ways out. And even if you have never been a swimmer, it was just fine according to some who had never been out in the water or kayaking for that matter, (which I have been, such a blast!)
Not only that, it's a great workout for your arms! We were out there for at least an hour and a half just gabbing about men, work, food, working out, movies, the usual girl talk. It was so nice just to be able to relax and let go. I am often uptight after a work week and tend to hide out either on the computer, read a book, or sleep, or cook, but what a great change to do something that didn't require any social effort, just energy for a great outdoor activity. I would definitely recommend going, bring a friend, pack some water, and enjoy the scenery.
Being surrounded by the river and the nature helped me tune out to everything and focus on the wonderful friends I was with, and just simply be. It was truly blissful and I found so much joy in it. I couldn't stop laughing as our kayaks kept bumping into one another! Picture this : three yellow kayak what should be considered, banana boats, crashing into each other, and everyone just in fits of laughter not intentionally meaning to hit anything or anyone. It was just a gradual collide each time, and we stopped trying to fight preventing the collisions, but let them happen.
I somehow that this little moment, blurb in time is completely metaphorical. I can just picture Sheldon from 'Big Bang Theory' saying something like that, but it felt like it. I mean I was letting the collisions occur and after awhile, I let go. It was freeing, I didn't have to keep worrying that I was going to hit one of the girls or their boat in some way. No, I as going with the flow, or in this case the wind. I let it happen. Metaphor for life : go with the flow and just let go. If we stop trying to control the outcome it will fall into place naturally, over time.
As I was paddling back into the launch bay, I breathed a long breath of contentment, one I was grateful to do. What a feeling! Such a great time, another fun memory to store in my mind. Kayaking on the Sacramento River was the perfect way to end a great day; from a pedicure, to finishing a book, to napping and writing a blog, then out to paddle, in a word, Incredible.....
