Adventure List #28 Flying and Flight Lesson
Last weekend, I went to Placerville Airport and a friend/coworker, Pete Meyer took me up in his Camanche small plane. I got up super early, 4:45am. Mia did not like the wake up call lol. I tried to slip out quietly and make sure she was warm. The airport itself is way high up in the hills, and the sunrise that morning was beautiful. The air was super chilly, as the frost was slowly trying to lift from the trees, and crisp as we parked our cars by the garages and hangars.
The trip was incredible! I have never experienced something so advanced, but yet so smooth, not as much noise, and unbelievable speed. I even got to fly the plane for a little while. I wore headphones all the way back from 1993! Talking on the radio, felt like the big leagues, and I was definitely stoked to learn a lot of different instructions and rules.
Usually it can be pretty boring up there, but I was all over the place, looking at the view, taking in the sounds, smells, just as if I was Disneyland for the skies. What a privilege to go up there and be able to do that, and be allowed to pilot for a bit. I was a little worried at first, but he ended up saying I was natural, it was crazy. I loved how I could just float up there, and fly past the snowcap mountains. We flew to Red Bluff and the breakfast place was closed. Flew over Chico and Mt. Lassen, and Mt. Shasta. When we got back, our stomachs were growling so much, we decided to hit a Waffle Cafe down the hill and eat some breakfast. I ordered an omelet, and hash browns, yummy yummy.
The Camanche was tied to it's holding bay, and took some pictures while I flew, on the plane, the views, etc. I was so happy to be able to do this. The speeds and driving is a lot different from a car, you almost have to touch lighter than you would a car steering wheel. The bar pushed down takes the nose downward, and release, pulls upward. He even had a device which helped us steer the way to our destination. It also helped with my flight path and establish a better straight line motion as I was going.
Pete told me he even has headphones for dogs, which is neat! Maybe Mia will go up in the air one day! I liked how the app he had on his ipad told us the time, how much we had traveled so far, and named all the lakes, reservoirs, mountains, places, and such. It was as if google map had transformed, but added deeper coordinates and altitude speeds.
I would highly recommend doing this, if you do not have a fear of heights, or have problems with air pressure. It is unlike anything else, and the pictures of the moments do not compare to what you see before your eyes. Hope and pray I get to go next time, and maybe a helicopter fly too. Thanks again Pete.
