Fitness: more than just flipping channels and couch surfing

A coworker wanted to know why her crazy crash course food diets weren’t doing anything and she asked me if I was on one. Now, I am not a health expert or a health instructor at all, but I believe staying healthy and fit at the same time go hand in hand. My father is a vegetarian who ate meat in the early days before his jaw surgery. After changing his diet, he also learned a great deal about health and fitness. I took a few lessons from him such as that a juice processer was a great way to get a ton of nutrients into your body through all kinds of fruits and vegetables. I started hitting a rigorous gym journey in college and continued into my current mode as a working girl. I grabbed a gold’s gym membership when I moved back home and got my butt kicked. I found out quickly that a gym workout was well worth it if you came out sweating buckets and were sore from head to toe; also means you worked hard in class. I took classes such as: Hit and Tabata Training, RIPPED, Spin, kickboxing, and Advanced Step. Outside of the gym, I met some friends who introduced me into the dance community. I am not talking about holding hands in a gym from junior high, this kind of dancing is all different ones such as Blues, Swing, and Country Line Dancing. It’s a workout all it’s own and if you have had a rough day, or you need to feel weightless and free spirited it is the way to go! After moving to a new area, I found 24 hr fitness and took spin classes, and bumped up my workout routines. I just recently transferred to an Ultimate 24hr gym spot and it instantly felt like home. I have a love of swimming and their pool is enormous. I took my first body combat class and it was awesome! The instructor prepped me beforehand on all the combos and I knew a thing or two from Gold’s Gym, which helped a bit. It was the best butt kicking since Ripped with my two fave instructors (you know who you are!). Fitness is so important to health and especially when you age. Working out boosts libido, mood, and to my coworker, makes your diet plan a little less painful I hope. When I go to the gym or dancing, it’s not about anyone, anything, just my body, moving to the beat of the music; feeling the rhythm. People don’t just work out anymore; they tone and train, and push themselves to new limits and heights.  Yoga doesn’t really work for me, but I know for some of my friends, they come out feeling refreshed. No matter what activity it is, if it burns calories and makes you feel good, it’s a good plan. I don’t recommend the crash course diets unless you are in cross fit or trying a tough mudder; those diets can make you very sick. For example, no meat, no dairy, no juice except water, once you go back to those, your body takes longer to adjust and you become weaker unless you have already done the practice prior. I think it’s really fun to be hardcore and I admire anyone who goes into competition with their skills too. Fitness is a way of life; if you can’t beat em, join em, because eventually as the pain leaves your body, you will get stronger too. I hear the compliment of looking good, and some think, that’s why I do fitness, but that’s not what it is, sure have goals, but remember eating right and working out are two different things. The U.S. society has some pretty obsecene obesity rates; (this isn’t your average curvy, healthy individual, no this is an out of control body where you can’t fit into doorways, bathtubs, and use a wheelchair to move around, these types are dangerous and debilitating. Even if it means starting out at pool slow exercises and walking places, it’s doable. An instructor once told me,  “You have to want to improve and get healthy. People and teachers cannot be that willpower. I know it’s hard, because I have read stories and seen reality tv shows such as Biggest Loser that depict trainees who choose to try fitness to live longer. Fitness means trials, tribulations, pain, challenges, frustation, and wanting to give up, but never doing so. I see it as when an overweight mom can’t lift her daughter anymore or a man who can’t keep up doing household chores, or doing everyday things, because they weren’t trying. That daughter needs a strong mom, and that man needs healthy joints to keep going; the answer? Fitness. I pray when I am in the aging process, that I can still kick it old school, and have fun; maybe not with the same energy capacity and stamina as a young one, but still vibrant and agile like my friend Irene(a lady) from Ripped class who mind you, goes to two workout classes on the weekends, like a boss, and is faster than me! Get workout on!
