Birthday Fun, No Expectations, just gratitude
Last year around this time, I was all over the place trying to plan something super amazing with all of my friends. If any of you work a lot and don't really socialize only on weekends and some if very few week nights, you know, that planning something during this month is always a mess. I wanted so much to plan this huge extravangana when I turned 25 and it was ridiculous. I wound up getting very upset and realized I could make my own fun times. I am at the age and still unattached with no one to have to seek approval from, except of course the number one man upstairs.
That being said, this year I took on a whole new approach and decided to plan my own birthday weekend. I went on a hike up in Auburn with some friends on that friday, then went to bed early. Saturday I woke up super early, got in the car and drove to Stinson Beach and walked around, bought a homemade donut and then headed to Muir Valley. I hiked the lower part on the bike trails for a bit, and then stopped at a cafe called DipSea. It was there where I had chicken sausage egss benedict and a strawberry shake. Delicious! I met a woman painting in a park and talked for awhile then made the drive back home. The other end of the highway was a packed set of crazy. Everyone wanted to go to the beach.
That night, two of my friends invited me to a Valentines girls night dinner. I never have liked that holiday, but that has got to be one of the best Valentines Days I have ever spent! They made good food, we drank wine and played a Big Bang Theory version of Apples-to-Apples. They gave me a special birthday gift and I truly enjoyed laughing the whole evening and just chit-chatting about anything and everything. I also went to go see a movie Thursday afternoon called Jupiter Ascending which was good.
Sunday, I got in the car again and drove to Lodi and went to Dancing Fox brewery, winery, bakery and cafe. I had fish n chips and my friend Karin showed up for the wine and beer tasting parts. I was giggling, singing, smiling, walking around the cute town, and wishing I could visit a friend of mine who lived there. It was beyond silly and we were having such a good time, that if I let it go, it would not have interfered with my day. I let it and that was a mistake. I think it's all about timing, and all about what you have right in front of you.
To be honest, say I didn't have any money or any friends, what would I do then... walking the Palladio sidewalks yesterday before seeing Kingsman, I realized that all the well wishes and being here in Sacramento wasn't so bad afterall. I had a huge dislike for it, and sometimes still do. I wanted out and to move away, do big things. Sure, the trips will be a big deal, I don't know where any of them will take me, but I hope I remember that home doesn't expect me to be someone or do something. The people are right there and I am happy to be here. My brother James called me on the phone and it had to be the highlight of my day. Julia a friend from bible study, called me that night. Those two calls were the best. Just hearing someone and chatting with them, knowing they thought of me and what I think should be just a normal day of the week, it was nice and I felt special. Much gratitude to them both and to all with their well wishes! There is something to be said about what we appreciate and who really cares about us around where we are. At the pub last night, we even took first place in trivia, and the guys I sat with didn't judge me when I took a cupcake from Walmart, lit 99cent candles and celebrated another year older.
